Colonel Morrow was brevetted colonel of volunteers,March 13, 1865, for conspicuous gallantry in action, andwas commended by Colonel Hatch, commanding Districtof New Mexico, in 18S0, for his persistent pursuit ofIndians, in which he exerted himself to such an extentas to produce a dangerous hemorrhage. He was promoted colonel of the Third Cavalry Feb-ruary 18, 1891, and is at present stationed at Fort Mc-intosh, Texas. 286 OFFICERS OF THE ARMY AND NAVY {regular). CAPTAIN ALFRED MORTON. Captain Alfred Morton (Ninth Infantry) was bornin Maine on January 16, 1834. He entered the volunteerservice from California during the war ofthe Rebellion when he was appointed a first lieutenant of the sameregiment, and was promoted captain February 14, 1863. Captain Mortons regiment was kept upon the Pacificcoast during the war, and he was on duty in Californiamost of the time. He participated in an expeditionagainst the Indians in the Humboldt Military District inthe summer of 1863, and he was subsequently provost-marshal of San Francisco, and of the State of California,lie was mustered out of the Second California CavalryNovember 25, 1864, having been appointed major of theSeventh California Infantry. He retained the latter rankuntil finally mustered out of the volunteer service onMarch 17, 1866. Captain Morton entered the regular service as secondlieutenant Ninth Infantry March
