Pollution testing. Computer screen display of a chromatograph of a polluted environmental sample. The screen is partially viewed through the laboratory glassware used to collect and store the samples. There are a number of spikes on the computer screen which represent the presence of pollutants. Chromatography is the breaking-up of complex compounds and mixtures into their constituent components before separating and analysing them. Typical techniques include liquid chromatography, a separation of the mobile molecules in solution, and mass spectrometry, the separation of ions by their mass-to-charge ratio.
