Its eruptionswere frequently accompanied by the ejection of large second period of activity took place in 1888, since whichtime it has remained inactive. Prismatic Lake is the most perfect spring of its kindin the world. It rests on the summit of a self-built mound,sloping very gently in all directions. A TOUR OF THE PARK. 293 resembles a spider web, with the spider (the spring) inthe center. The pool is 250 by 300 feet in size. Over thelake hangs an ever-present cloud of steam, which itselfoften bears a crimson tinge, reflected from the watersbelow. The steam unfortunately obscures the surface ofthe lake, and one involuntarily washes for a row-boat, inwhich to explore its unseen portions. AVhercver \isible,there is a varied and wonderful play of colors, which fullyjustifies the name. Turquoise Spring is another large pool, 100 feet indiameter, and rivals Prismatic Lake in the beauty of itscoloring. The Midway Geyser Basin contains hundreds of othersprings, some of them very beautiful, but the Basin ismainly noted for the three features just described. CHAPTER XAa. A TOUR OF THE PARK.
