Aquasar supercomputer. These water-cooled IBM BladeCenter servers were designed by IBM scientists in Zurich, Switzerland, and Boblingen, Germany. Developed as part of IBM's First-Of-A-Kind (FOAK) program, it was installed in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich). It consumes up to 40 percent less energy than a comparable air-cooled machine, and achieves a performance of six Teraflops with an energy efficiency of about 450 Megaflops per Watt. In addition, nine kilowatts of thermal power are fed into the building's heating system. Photographed in May 2010.
