Diatoms. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Epithemia and Navicula diatoms (pink). Diatoms are unicellular photosynthetic algae with mineralised cell walls (frustules). There are about 100,000 diatom species, forming an important part of the plankton at the base of the marine and freshwater food chains. These diatoms were found in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada of southern Spain, in the pool of a waterfall, at an altitude 2000 metres. Magnification: x1440 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
