In 1821 he attended the celebrated law school at Litch-field, Conn., then under Judge Gould, one of the most dis-tinguished jurists of his time. In 1823 he entered the officeof the Hon. James Richardson, of Dedham, Mass., was ad-mitted to the Bar, and immediately opened an office at thatplace. He made it the inflexible rule of his professional lifenever to undertake a case that he did not believe to be believed that an advocate loses his highest power when heloses the ever-conscious conviction that he is contendingfor the truth.
