Cox Tor is a hill on Dartmoor in Devonshire, a raw hill capped with a scatter of granite 'tor' outcrops as are so many of its neighbours. It stands out at the western edge of the high moor, within easy reach of Tavistock, the 'Capital of Dartmoor'. The hill climbs from the valley of the River Tavy, to the south-east of Peter Tavy (the village climbs from the river up the lower slopes of Cox Tor, its hamlet sitting higher on its slopes), to the east of Tavistock. It is the first hill of the open high moor encountered north of the eastward road from Tavistock, the B3357, and is a popular climb from the viewpoint on the road. The slopes of Cox Tor are littered with the remains of forgotten ages. Here are hut circles and cairns, field boundaries and other traces of lost settlements.
