This new winter squash, introduced by us two ^-ears ago, first attracted our attention in France in the summer of 18S3, where we were favorably impressed with its appear- ance and growth. The seed was brought to France by a traveler from Hungary, where, however, it is evidently not common, as we have neither seen it nor learned anything of the variety in either of our visits to that countrj'. It has been called Olive Squash, as the shape and color of the fruit -exactly resemble an olive. It belongs to the Cucurbita Maxima family, with the split foot. The fruit is a litde longer and the skin smoother than the Hubbard, while the quality of flesh is better. The squashes weigh five to ten pounds each, skm very smooth and extremely thin, of a beautiful, light olive-green color, with a few narrow stripes of a lighter shade. The flesh is very thick, of a rich golden-yellow color, firm, mealy, very sweet, and of very good quality. As a winter squash it is likely to occupy a front rank.
