Epidural anaesthetic. Anaesthetist injecting a local anesthetic prior to inserting a cannula, through which the patient will be given an epidural anaesthetic. An epidural anaesthetic is delivered to the epidural space (the space around the membranes that surround the spinal cord). It causes a loss of sensation and loss of pain in the lower half of the body. This patient is being anaesthetised prior to surgery.
