Oliva gourmet Restaurant pizzeria. New York. Oliva Cafe on Broadway Lower Manhattan New York City New York USA. SoHo is a neighborhood of Manhattan in New York ( USA). Bordered on the north by Houston Street , on the east by the Bowery , Canal Street to the south, west and West . Initially (from 1840 ) , this was a low neighborhood known as Hell's Hundred Acres ( ' The hundred acres of hell ') of the Cast -Iron District ( ' District of cast iron ' ) . He became famous as a neighborhood of artists during the 1960s and 1970s, when the spaces were cheap because the old factories were converted into lofts and studios. In a pattern that would become familiar to other parts of the city in the following decades , the neighborhood up the socioeconomic ladder , which eventually led to an exodus of most artists , leaving only galleries, boutiques, unique restaurants and as new occupants , the yuppies. SoHo called because this is the area " South of Houston Street " (" South of Houston Street "), and in reference to the area of the same name of the city of London.
