Tintern Abbey, River Wye, Tintern Pava, Chepstow, Monmouthshire. Looking north west from the Devil's Pulpit and Offas Dyke showing the abbey's location in a fertile valley. It was the first Cistercian foundation in Wales, 1131 by Norman Lord of Chepstow, Walter de Clare (or William Fitz Richard). The monks came from L’Aumône, near Chartres. The community reached 20 in C13th. Great rebuilding began under Bigod at end of C13th. Situated outside the main area of Welsh English fighting so it survived well. Edward II spent 2 nights here while fleeing the army of his wife Queen Isabella & her lover Roger Mortimer. Abbey dissolved in 1536. In Early Christian times St Tewdric (Theodoric) retired as a hermit to Tintern, he was fatally wounded in battle here c. 470 when called out of retirement to lead his people against invading Saxons.
