Inflamed and swollen kidney, gross specimen. This is a case of chronic nephritis, an inflammation of the kidney. Nephritis is often caused by a bacterial infection. It prevents the kidney from effectively filtering waste products from blood. Symptoms include accumulation of fluid in the tissues and blood and protein in the blood. Without treatment it can lead to kidney failure, which is fatal.
