Scandium electron configuration. Illustration of the atomic structure and electron configuration of the element scandium. An atom of this element has 21 electrons (black dots) in four shells around the nucleus. There are two electrons in the first shell (1s orbital), eight electrons filling the second shell (2s and 2p orbitals), and nine electrons filling the third shell (3s, 3p and 3d orbitals). Finally, there are two electrons in the fourth shell (4s orbital). The electron configuration is 2,8,9,2. The isotope shown here is scandium-45, with a nucleus of 21 protons (red) and 24 neutrons (blue). All isotopes of an element have the same electronic structure.
