The Carlsberg Laboratory in was founded in 1875 by J. C. Jacobsen, the founder of the Carlsberg brewery. The laboratory researched protein chemistry and yeast purification as related to brewing. It also was the first to introduce the concept of pH to acid-base chemistry, as these old jars demonstrate.
