YoungJoel first tempted fortune as asmall tradesman in Prescott,Canada, before he was of returned from that place tohis home, entered an academy,taught school, visited the prin-cipal Eastern cities, improved a farm his father hadgiven him, made a tour in the South, worked therein building railroads, experienced a slorm on theGulf of Mexico, visited the gold diggings of NorthernGeorgia, and returned via Nashville to St. Louis andthrough Illinois to his fathers home, when he mar-ried. In 1833, having sold his farm, he removed,with his wife and one child, to Illinois, and entereda claim on Government land near the head of AuSable River, in what is now Kendall County.
