He no longersaw before him forensic triumphs and thejudicial toga, the picture of a disruptedcoimtry filling his whole vision. He en-listed in defense of the Union on April 19,1861, being among the first to proffer hisservices. They were so prolonged and ofso distinguished a character that theirrecords appear in every contemporaryhistory of Ohio. On April 27, 1861, hewas commissioned major of the ThirdOhio Volunteer Infantry, for a period of. HON. J. WARREN KEIFER. AND EEPEESENTATIVE CITIZENS. 559 three months, and before the expirationof that time was commissioned for threeyears. He participated in the battle ofRich Mountain, July 11, 1861, and in thesame year was on the field at Cheat Moun-tain and Elk Water, West Virginia. OnFebruary 12, 1862, he was commissionedlieutenant-colonel of the Third Ohio In-fantry regiment and was present at thecapture of Bowling Green, Kentucky;Nashville, Tennessee, and Huntsville andBridgeport, Alabama. In April, 1862, heled an expedition into Georgia and per-formed an important service in destroy-ing the saltpetre works at Nickajaek September 30, 1862, he was commis-sioned colonel of the 110th Regiment,Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and being as-signed to General Milroys division inWest Viiginia, was placed in commandof a brigade and the post at June 13th, 14th and 15th, 1863, wasfoug
