(on ground-plan, PI. IV). It will be observedthat the wall of the old house adjoining is built upon the Romanwall, to which the plaster, in places, still adheres. The letter above-mentioned, and its results, have disclosed the fact that the existence of the Villa was not so untirely unknown as had been at first supposed ; and in the course of the operations it was brought under our notice that a pavement and foundations Vol. XII. In the meantime a paragraph had appeared in the newspapersannouncing the discovery ; and Mr. Richard Smith, the intelligentoccupant of the farm, received an anonymous letter from Weston-super-Mare enquiring if the pavement now found is the samewhich many years ago was discovered near the the Granary,but the description of site not being very definite, Mr. Smithwas requested to write to his corespondent and make furtherenquiries respecting the alleged former discovery, and also toenquire of the aged people of the parish if they could give anyinformation upon the subject, which latter was answered in thenegative.
