A young northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) growls at the photographer who interrupted her rest on a stony beach in the San Benito Islands in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Baja California in Mexico. Females lack the elongated snout that resembles the trunk of an elephant and gives name to the species. Males (bulls) are easily identified by their prominent proboscis and much larger body that can weigh up to 5,500 pounds (2495 kilograms) and grow to as much as 16 feet ( meters) in length.
