This preference on the part of the femalemembers was afterwards embodied in the Constitution of thechurch, except that they are permitted to vote at the election ofa pastor. All other elections are conducted by the male membersin good standing. Rev. Barclays pastorate began December i, 1868, when hewas installed by Rev. Drs. E. W. Hutter, of Philadelphia, and Wedekind, of New York, and continued to October i, 1872,nearly four years. During this time the church building on North. ST. PAULS LUTHERAN CHURCH, EASTON, PA.(25O 252 EAST PENNSYLVANIA SYNOD. Fourth street was erected, at a cost of about ^13, Itsdedication took place January 9, 1870. The dedicatory sermonwas preached, contrary to the usual custom, by the pastor him-self—not from choice, however. The services of Drs. JohnMcCron, of Baltimore, and A. C. Wedekind, of New York, hadbeen engaged for the occasion ; but, at the appointed time. was kept away by sickness and Dr. Wedekind missedthe train ! It was during Dr. Barclays pastorate that a missionwas started on College Hill which has since developed into (Fifth) Lutheran Church of Easton. After servingchurches in Baltimore, and Dayton, Ohio, for about fifteen Barclay died in Baltimore, October 13, 1887. The second pastor of St. Pauls was Rev. Harvey W.
