It may be asked whether the difference found is a real one, or could be due to differences in recording, due to the fact that in the latter part of the 19th century the number of recorded infant deaths is relatively greater than in earlier years. In order to exclude this fallacy, the same comparison has been made with cases born before the year 1800.
