Back muscles. Computer artwork of the erector spinae muscles of the back, seen from inside the ribcage. This group consists of three pairs of muscles on either side of the spine. The innermost muscles (just seen between the transverse processes of the spine) are the spinalis muscles. Outside of these are the longissimus muscles. Outermost are the iliocostalis muscles. The erector spinae are the strongest back muscles. They maintain good posture and stabilise the torso.
