Boeing F2B-1 fighter plane Aboard USS LANGLEY (CV-1), 1928. This photo shows the arresting gear in use at that time. In addition to the usual tail hook, the plane carried a "comb" arrangement of anchor shaped hooks on its landing gear axle. These engaged a series of fore and aft wires on the carrier's flight deck, preventing the plane from veering to either side. The fore and aft wires can be seen on the deck below the plane. When in use, they were raised off the deck by wooden "fiddle blocks".
