Galapagos tortoise. The Galapagos tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra) is the largest living species of tortoise and the 10th heaviest reptiles on Earth. It can reach weights of over 400kg and lengths of over metres. It is one of the longest-lived vertebrates on the planet, with life spans in the wild of over 100 years.
