Both the surgeon and radiologist expected radiation to de-strov the remaining cancer cells. Both were disappointed becauseneither realized that cutting out the center of the disease never cured apatient, but hastened the cancerous process and never afforded any pallia-tion. In fact, the patient was in a much worse condition to derive thefull eftect from radiotherapy than before the operation. Secondly, the. Fis- o. After years of treating post-operatively,no one obtaining uniform results, some radiologists advocated ante-operative radiation. In some of these cases, particularly cancer of thelower lip, the lesions responded promptly and the patient was clinicallycured without operation. Later, when we treated the local lesion with radium and the adja-cent lymphatics of both sides of the neck with either deep x-ray orradium packs, the results were so much better that many consideredprimarily radium in the treatment of all cancers of the lip and buccalcavity. During the past three years better results have been obtainedby imbedding raditim in cancer of the mouth and throat. Some ad
