Strait of Hormuz, satellite image. Iran is at right, Iraq at top centre, Saudi Arabia at centre left and Oman at bottom left with the United Arab Emirates above it. This narrow strait links the Persian Gulf (upper centre) to the Arabian Sea (bottom). It is the only route for ships carrying exports from the major oil-producing countries around the Persian Gulf. Smoke clouds from burning oil at a ruptured pipeline are seen over the Iraqi coast. Image obtained on 24th March 2004.
