JohnAdam, of the Free South Church, under-took to bring the matter before his kirk-session. The result was that the SouthChurch, with the full approval of thePresbytery, assumed a responsibility whichit continued to discharge long after theGallowgate Mission was a fully sanctionedcharge. Mr. Lowe was succeeded by Rev. JamesGoodall, who had been labouring in theWest Port Mission, Hawick. Mr. Goodallentered on the work in July, 1864, and two. Rev. This opened the wayfor issuing a call, and on 20th September,1864, Mr. Goodall was ordained as firstminister of the congregation. He con-tinued in the active ministry of thechurch for other 35 years, and lie be-came one of the most familiar figures inthe Gallowgate district. His kindlyintercourse with the people andhis unobtrusive zeal and earnestness were recognised on every was only by reason of the infirmitiesof advancing age that he retired from theactive duties of the pastorate in 1900, andapplied for the appointment of a colleagueand successor.
