James Sturm (laqves Sturme) JAMES STURM, a God-fearing, Christ-honouring magistrate, was born in visiting several countries in the courseof an extended Continental tour, he settleddown in Strasburg. There he took an activepart in the discussions of a society established forthe promotion of classical studies; he became amember of the Town Council, rising, in 1526, tothe office of chief magistrate ; and he established agymnasium, to the library of which he bequeathedhis collection of books. In the ecclesiastical movements of his times thismodel magistrate took an important though notprominent part. At the Diet of Spires, or Speier,in Rhenish Bavaria, Sturm defended his townsmenin abolishing the celebration of Mass ; and he en-dorsed the famous edict issued by the German 81 G Bezas Portraits of Reformers Princes there assembled, which claimed toleration forthe Evangelical faith, declaring that in the matter ofreligion every State shall live, rule, and believe soth
