Francis Frith photograph of Fish being weighed at Polperro, Cornwall - circa 1889

The men in the centre of this photograph are crowding around a set of scales where the fish landed in Polperro were weighed and then sold to dealers. In the 19th century, the men and women of the village lived frugally, making their money from the sea. They ate pilchards, caught locally, and potatoes grown in their own garden plots - National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London
