Naval Hospital Bremerton’s (NHB) Industrial Hygiene (IH) Department gathered for a congratulatory staff meeting after completing a comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Survey for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. According to Lt. Cmdr. Genaia T. Hill, Industrial Hygiene Department head, this achievement was a significant occasion for the entire department because of the sheer magnitude of the shipyard. It consists of over 14,500 civilian workers and Sailors working in 170 shops, performing over 1,200 unique processes. “Completing an Industrial Hygiene Survey for a highly industrial command of that size, with the necessary amount of professional detail and within Navy Medicine mandated periodicity is an uncommon occurrence for any industrial hygiene program office,” said Hill. Navy Medicine’s industrial hygiene is a preventive medicine profession which identifies health hazards and ensures a healthful work environment for those who serve the Navy. NHB’s IH Department of approximately 35 staff members evaluate all workplaces, including ships and submarines, to identify hazardous conditions such as noise, chemical exposure, and vibration - just to name a few - and makes recommendations to effectively control any hazard. We help keep employees safe and prevent illness in the workplace,” stated Lt. Cmdr. Genaia T. Hill, Industrial Hygiene department head.
