Union banners at London Rally on Workers Memorial Day, April 28 - Shop Stewards Network and Islington Trades Council
The International Workers Memorial Day is celebrated in countries across the world on April 28 each year. In London in 2009 there was a march and a rally, with trade unionists going first to the main London office of the Health and Safety Executive, where members of PCS and Unison working ther joined them for a short meeting, and then on to City Hall for a longer rally. Construction workers were a large part of the march, organnised by the Construction Safety Campaign, because of the dangers ond deaths in those industries, especially from falls and electrocution. There are still many workers suffering and dying from asbestos-related illnesses. Most accidents occur because employers flout regulations and cut corners to get jobs finished. Prosecutions are rare and convictions often carry risible penalities. Among groups taking part were , Families Against Corporate Killers - families of workers killed in workplace accidents, and the Battersea Crane Disaster Action Committee, formed after a passer-by was killed when a tower crane collapsed, as well as trade union branches from Unison, TGWU, Unite, PCS, CWU, Islington Trades Council, Battersea and Wandsworth TUC, TUC South and Eastern Region, and Thompsons Solicitors. There were moving speeches from two people whose son's had been killed in industrial accidents.
