HonningsvŒg is Norway's northernmost city, and lies within the Arctic Circle. And the first thing you see in the city is this bronze statue of Bamse, its most famous native. Bamse just happens to be a Saint Bernard. Bamse (Norwegian for 'teddy bear') (1937-1944) was a St. Bernard that became the heroic mascot of the Free Norwegian Forces during the Second World War. He became a symbol of Norwegian freedom during that conflict. The recipient of multiple medals for gallantry, Bamse was noted for his courage, kindness and nobility. The stories surrounding his life are legion, and collected in a noted biography. On 17 October 2006, HRH The Duke of York unveiled a larger than life sized bronze statue of Bamse, made by Scottish sculptor Alan Herriot, on Montrose's Wharf Street- where he died. This sculpture in his birthplace is an exact replica.
