Throughout the greater part of Polynesiathe friends or relatives of the murdered manare bound to avenge his death by killing themurderer, if they can secure him, or at allevents by killing one of his family. Thefamily of the victim then retaliate in theirturn, so that when a man goes into battle hemostly has a number of feuds on his the Corsican Vendetta, if such a feudcannot be carried out in a mans lifetime, hebequeaths it to his son, so that it may becarried on for any number of generations, This savage custom has stood greatly inthe way of the missionaries.
