Buddha Maitreya statue in Thiksey Monastery (gompa) in Ladakh, northern India


Tibetan Buddhist Thiksey Monastery is the largest monastery in central Ladakh. It is called mini Potala because of its resemblance to the most important Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Lhasa. Situated on a hill slope above Indus Valley, it has been built in 15th century. Statue of Maitreya Buddha (future Buddha is its main attraction. Statue is 15 meters high and has been erected to commemorate 14th Dalai Lama visit to monastery in 1970.
