There appears to be a trace of themetanotum or dorsal portion of the metathorax, forming a very narrowband between the post-scutellum and the first abdominal tergum. Ventrally the neck passes into the thorax, and its transparentintegument is extended on to the median area of the prothorax. This area is bounded posteriorly by the origin ofthe prothoracic or first pair of legs, and laterally by a pair of platesbearing a pair of sausage-shaped organs called the patagia (v. p. 477).Between each patagium and the origin of the leg is a small prominencebearing particularly large hairs. The same plate of exoskeleton whichbears the patagium extends along the side of the body almost as faras the anterior border of the first or mesothoracic spiracle. Thistogether with another piece is figured and described by Christophers(March, 1901, plate I.) as the pleuron of the mesothorax. We regardit as prothoracic and have so shaded it. Sharp (1895, p. 446) indeedregards the first spiracle of the Diptera as pr
