On the pier dedicated to the Genoese navigator Lanzarotto Malocello (14th century) is the statue of Santa Margherita Vergine, Martyr and Patron of the City, made of marble by the company Arrighini of Pietrasanta. Margaret (Antioch of Pisidia, 275 - 290) was a Christian maiden. He suffered martyrdom under the Roman Emperor Maximian (Sirmio 250 - Massilia 310). According to hagiography, during one of her prisons, Margherita was swallowed by the devil in the form of a dragon, but managed to get rid of it by tearing his belly with his cross. For this episode she is also invoked to obtain an easy and painless childbirth. Saint Margaret is also highly venerated by the Orthodox Church. The Patron Saint Feast is celebrated on 20 July, with the traditional procession through the streets of the city with the Holy Relics of Saint Margaret of Antioch (preserved in the Basilica) and the traditional Blessing of the Sea.
