Nurseries (Horticulture) Pennsylvania Philadelphia Catalogs; Vegetables Seeds Catalogs; Plants, Ornamental Catalogs; Flowers Seeds Catalogs. 18 W. ATLEE BURPEE & CO., EARLY JERSEY WAKEFIELD CABBAGE. EARLY JERSEY WAKEFIELD CABBAGE. The JERSEY WAKEFIELD is decidedly the best first early Cabbage, and is so universally popular with market gardeners that we have devoted particular attention to growing the choicest and most " thorough- bred" strain. It heads up remarkably hard and solid; the heads are pyramidal in shape, generally pointed at the end, and, having few outside leaves, the plants can be set close together, although of large size for so early a Cabbage. The outer leaves are unusually thick and heavy (much more so than in any other early Cabbage), and it is thereby enabled to stand more cold weather without injury when carried through the winter either in the open ground in the South or in cold frames in the North. The Acme differs from all other strains of Late Flat Dutch in that it is quicker growing (earlier to mature), hence can be started later. The well-developed heads are true to type and uniform in color, which is an attractive bluish-green. The heads measure about thirteen inches across and weigh from ten to twelve pounds each; they will pack about fourteen to the barrel. The Acme comes very true, and is a sure header; the heads are of good, marketable size, hard, solid, and fine-grained. A very superior Cabbage for autumn and winter use.
