Pine cone. Light micrograph of a section through a male cone (strobilus) of a pine tree (Pinus sp.). The cone has a central axis, from which emanate scale leaves (microsporophylls). On their undersides are sporophylls bearing sac-like microsporangia (thin blue walls) full of developing microspore pollen grains (blue dots). When the wall of a microsporangium splits open the grains are carried by the wind to the female strobilus. Magnification: x10 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
