Walter Zinn (1906-2000), US nuclear physicist. Zinn is best known for his work on the Manhattan Project, which produced the first atomic bomb. He worked in the metallurgical laboratory and is credited with initiating the world's first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction by withdrawing a control rod from Chicago Pile-1 (CP1), the world's first nuclear reactor, at the University of Chicago, on 2nd December 1942.
