He had an ensigns commission inthe 1 st or Royal Scots regiment of Foot,1795, and served in the army of theArchduke Charles, from which he arrivedin London, with despatches from ColonelCrawford, 4th July 1796. After beingcaptain in the 113th regiment of Foot, hegot a company of the 22nd Foot in 1798,and exchanged it for a lieutenancy inthe 3rd regiment of Foot Guards. He was appointed assistant to theQuarter-Master-General of the forces, with the rank of Major in the Army,9th June 1803, and married, at Dublin, 16th July 1807, Louisa, only childof Sir Edward Leslie of Tarbert, in the county of Kerry, NINTH MARQUIS OF HUNTLY 455 5. George, fifth Earl of Aboyne {afterwards ninth Marquis of Huntly), born at Edinburgh 28th June 1761 ; succeeded his father at the endof 1794. In December 1777, from an ensigncy in the 1st regiment ofFoot Guards he was promoted to a company in the 81st (Highland)regiment. He was one of the aides-de-camp of the Earl of Carlisle whenLord-Lieutenant of Ireland in 1780; had a troop in the 9th regiment ofDragoons in 1782 ; and was constituted major of an independent corps ofFoot (which was reduced at the peace), 12th March 1783. He exchangedfrom half-pay to the majority of the 35th regiment of Foot in 1788 ; and inApril of the following year was promoted to the lieutenant-colonelcy ofthat regiment, which, in the course of a few months, he exchanged withLieutenant-Colonel Lennox for his company in the C
