Pneumonia. Coloured X-ray of a patient's chest showing lobar pneumonia (blue) in the lower lobe of the patient's right lung. This disease is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. The alveoli (the air sacs of the lungs, too small to be seen) become blocked with pus, forcing air out and causing the lung to solidify. Symptoms include coughing and chest pain. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs.
