Sea pens (Pennatula phosphorea in this instance) are so called because they remind people of old-fashioned quill pens. They are soft corals which are usually encountered on sandy bottoms at depths in excess of 20 metres, and where strong currents are infrequent. They have the ability of retreating into the sand by extruding water from their communal skeletons. They are also able to "walk".
