. A dictionary of the Bible .. . Arabian Camel. tliau th^ baggage-camel, and is used chiefly forriding pui-poses, it is merely a finer breed than theother : the Arabs call it the Heine. The speed ofthe dromedary has been greatly exaggerated, theArabs asserting that it is swifter than the horse;eight or nine miles an hour is the utmost it is ableto perform, this pace, however, it is able to keep upfor hours together. The Bactrian camel {CamelusBactrianus), the only other known species, has two. Bactrian Camel. humps; it is not capable of such endurance as itsArabian cousin: this species is found in China, Russia, and throughout Central Asia, and is employed bythe Persians in war to carry one or two guns whichare fixed to the saddle. Col. H. Smith says this speciesappears figured in the processions of the ancientPersian satiapies among the bas-reliefs of Chehel^linar. Though the Bactrian camel was probablynot used by the Jews, it was doubtless known tothem in a late period of their history, from theirrelations with Persia and Chaldaea. Russell {, of Alep. ii. 170, 2nd ed.) says the two-humped camel is now seldom seen at Aleppo. An expression derived from the Arabs. See thequotiition from the Arabian naturalist Damir, quoted byBochart, Hieroz. I. 13. CAMPHIRE The camel, as may be readily conceived, is thesubject amongst Orientals of many proverbial ex-pressions ; see many cited by Bochart {Hieroz. ), and comp. Matt, xxiii. 24, and six. 24-, wherethere can be no doubt
