The engine presents a neat and com-pact appearance, and was built by theVulcan Foundry Company, Ltd., attheir locomotive works at Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire. Walschaertsvalve gear is used in connection withthe high pressure cylinders. The littlevalve which can just be seen nestlingclose behind the chimney is the outletlor the safety valve from the low pres-sure steam chest. The engine has two reach rods, onefor the high and one for the low pres-sure valve gear. The driving wheelsare 80 ins. in diameter. The weighton the drivers is about 37 tons, theleading bogie carries 2054 tons and thetrailing wheels 13^ tons, so that thetotal weight of the engine is, therefore,71 tons. The total weight of engineand tender is 112 tons. All these arelong tons of 2,240 lbs. each. The boiler carries a pressure of 200lbs. and has a total heating surface sq. ft. and a grate area of 31 Serve tubes are used. There are149 of them and they
