That is to say,peristalsis is a coordinated, purposeful action involving bothstimulation and inhibition. It is designed to propel the intestinalcontents forward and bring them into contact with the intestinaljuices. But if, instead of this coordinated wave of contractionand relaxation, there is a spasmodic contraction of the intestineabout some offending body, even about an accumulation of gas,. In such a caseatropine, by allaying the spasm, may permit normal peristalsisto be restored, and, as a consequence, cause a disappearance ofboth the cramp and the constipation.
