Abseilers clean the stainless steel walls at the Jubilee Line's futuristic Westminster station, part of London's Tube network.
The Jubilee Line Extension's supervising architect, Roland Paoletti, commissioned different architects to create each of the 11 stations from Westminster to Stratford in east London. The spectacular station at North Greenwich and those at Southwark and Canary Wharf have come in for special praise. For many, however, Westminster’s vast concrete and stainless steel edifice (designed by Michael Hopkins and Partners) remains the most beautiful. The old Westminster Station (of which, nothing now remains) was excavated to a huge depth of 39 metres, the deepest and most complex excavation ever attempted in the UK. One of the most difficult problems faced by the engineering team was to build the new station around the existing Circle and District line tracks, which had to continue in service throughout the construction. Due to the extremely limited space on the site, the two tunnels were placed one on top of the other, rather than the usual side-by-side arrangement. The Jubilee Line covers ( miles) and serves 27 stations between Stanmore and Stratford. The equivalent statistic for the new extended section is 16km (10 miles) of which km ( miles) is in tunnel and km ( miles) on the surface. Work started on the £ billion project to extend the Jubilee line in December 1993. The extension runs from Green Park to Stratford and was opened in three phases during 1999.
