In the northern part of New York State various citiesbegan to produce pianofortes before 1820. I find, forinstance, that one Morrison made musical instrumentsand pianos in Buffalo in 1811. He was a Scotchman andhailed from Glasgow originally. The first makers ofany particular significance, however, were Kurtzman andD. Benson & Company. Benson & Company were inbusiness in 1842 and made very reputable instrumentsabout that period. I find that Benson & Company car-ried off the gold medal for the best piano at the NewYork Mechanics Institute in 1850, and won at the time. James A. Gray. ALBANY. 145 high encomiums from the Committee on Musical Instru-ments. C. Kurtzman was making pianos before 1850,and was known up to a recent period as a good makerof popular-priced instruments. The business to-day iscarried on by Kurtzman & Company, made up of L. , A. Cordes, and Adolph Guger. Lafayette Louis, another Buffalonian, took out a pat-ent in 1863 for a combination of the reed organ and pianoafter Colemans methods, which had a short term of Rochester pianos were made as early as 1809 byGeorge Cartwright, who was in business up to 1813,when he left the city. After 1840 Michael Miller beganbusiness in a modest way. One of his improvements inkey-adjustment was patented in 1851. This related toan ingenious and complicated scheme for placing thekeys so as to produce greater elasticity in touch, but itnever survived. Frederick Starr and Dvvight Gibbonsstarted some time during 1850. Gi
