The young wood of the wildJ^uropean and American varieties is^^^^^^^T^^^- thorny, crooked, and hard, so that thetree can be used for hedges. Growingin a rich soil, and preserved from the attacks of the borer, the crab-apple tree becomes a massy-foliaged low tree, whose lower boughsnearly rest on the ground at their extremities. The American or Sweet-scented Crab, P. in. coronaria, is afiner variety than the wildings of Europe, having more fragrantblossoms, which cover the tree in May. The foliage is said also toremain on the tree longer. The fruit is round, about an inch indiameter, a pure green color, and of a pungent acidity that hasmade the phrase as sour as a crab a by-word in the leaves when touched by tlie frost have an odor of violets. Itsbark is rough and DECIDUOUS TREES. 420 The Siberian Crab, P. m. J^naiifolia, has smoother, Hghter-colored twigs and bark than our wilding, a more graceful growth, and less abundant and less fragrant bloom ; but its clusters ofsmall yellow fruit add greatly to the beauty of the tree in Septem-ber. There is a variety with pink-colored fruit. The Chinese Double-flowering Crab, F. spedahilis, is thefinest of all the crab-trees for ornamental planting. Its blossomsare semi-double, very large, nearly two inches in diameter, of arose-color when expanded, but a beautiful deep red in the fruit is yellow, when ripe, and the size of a cherry. The treeattains a larger size than most of the crab-apple trees. It is anupright grower, when young, but with age its branches spread andbend until it becomes a graceful drooping-boughed tree.
