A four-year-old survivor of Buchenwald, sits on the running board of an UNRRA truck soon after the liberation of the camp. The child has been identified as Joseph Schleifstein. Buchenwald and its 139 sub-camps were forced labour camps not death camps and there were no gas chambers there. However poor conditions, abuse and executions led to 56500 deaths there. It liberated by the US Army on the 11th April 1945.
