Vesalius stealing a skeleton. Coloured historical artwork depicting Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) stealing the skeleton of a criminal from the gallows. Vesalius was a Belgian anatomist most famous for his 1543 book De Corporis Humani Fabrica (On the Structure of the Human Body), which set a completely new level of accuracy in anatomy. The gallows were a frequent legal source of cadavers at the time of Vesalius and the bodies of executed criminals were often made available to schools of medicine. However, Vesalius and his students often stole bodies both before and after burial.
