Asterophyllites horsetail fossil. Close-up of a slab of coal shale containing a fossilised specimen of an Asterophyllites horsetail plant. It dates from around 300 million years ago, during the Westphalian stage of the Carboniferous. It is from the Aniche coalfield of northern France. The entire specimen (see C018/9382) measures 20 by 36 centimetres. It is part of the Barrois collection at the Museum of Geology in Lille, France.
